Steps trending this week: “Wild Things” and Moana

Tim Milgram

Inspiration is hard to find on dreary December days amid mountains of midterm prep work but YouTube is never gloomy as choreographers post jaw dropping routines almost weekly. Thus, these are some highlights of what’s trending on the dance corner of YouTube. Tim Milgram is a genius when it comes to cinematography and capturing dancer’s movement- no doubt about that. However his latest collaboration with JoJo Gomez for her class choreography “Wild Things” is something else. Set to Alessia Cara’s single “Wild Things,” the video features hip hop prodigy, Kaycee Rice. And well you just have to see it.

Gomez’s inspiration for the choreography came from her own childhood and experiences. In her latest Instagram post, Gomez recalls “knowing what it feels like to be rejected and ridiculed for being herself.” Ultimately, through her routine to “Wild Things,” Gomez showcases that having an unapologetic mindset and confidence is something to be celebrated rather than criticized.

Kyle Hanagami transcended yet another genre of music by choreographing to “How Far I’ll Go”, a song off of Disney’s latest blockbuster Moana. Hanagami’s music choice shocked even his dancers.

“I still can’t believe he (Hanagami) choreographed to that song,” Jake Kodish said on Instagram.

But boy, was it the right one. Auli’i Cravalho, the voice actress of Moana commented on the video expressing her love for the dancers and their performances. It’s Hanagami’s unique sound choice and movement that allows him to stand out in the dance industry and showcase the extent of his artistry.
