With the start of a new year comes a new show season for the theatre world. This years season at the broward center contains a series of new musicals, revivals, and tony nominee and winners.

 

The first show of the season is “Phantom of the Opera” played October 10th-21st, 2018. The show was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber as an adaptation of the french novel Le Fantôme de l’Opéra” and is a 1988  is the longest running broadway show of all time and a cult classic show. The drama follows “the phantom” a mysterious man who lives underneath the paris opera house  and his growing relationship with christine, a chorus girl whom he take under his wing to make a star performer and the complex love triangle that evolves between christine, the phantom, and christine’s new love Vicomte de Chagny.

 

Following this is another classic. “The King and I” played November 20th-December 2nd, 2018 is  recipient of multiple awards, including the 2015 tony for “best revival of a musical”. The story is based on fictionalized version of Anna Leonowens actual experience tutoring the king of Siams many wives and children that was published in the novel “Anna and the king of siam”.  The musical brings this story to life with gorgeous costumes, breathtaking sets, and musical classics such as “Getting to know you.” and “whistle a happy tune.” etc. etc. etc…

 

The next show of the season being played on December 18th, 2018-January 20th, 2019 is undoubtedly one of the most popular show on this list. The hip-hop, rap musical following the life of founding father Alexander hamilton “Hamilton”. The Music was written and performed by Lin-Manuel Miranda who also wrote music for “In the Heights” and the Disney film “Moana”. The show was winners of such awards as “Best musical.”, “Best original score.”, “Best orchestration.” and many more during the 70th Annual Tony Awards.

 

“The fiddler on the roof,” played February 20th-March 3rd, 2019 is a 2016 nominee for “best revival of a musical” is a long time classic. The show is an adaptation of a series of novels written by Sholem Aleichem, which follows the tale of Tevye, the father of five daughters trying to maintain his jewish faith in 1905 imperial russia; As well as his daughters who each desire to marry for love, each’s choice of a husband straying from his culture.

 

“Dear Evan Hansen” being played on March 26th-April 7th, 2019, another widely popular new musical which had been awarded “Best Musical”, “Best Score”, and “Best Orchestration” in the 2017 Tonys. The story follows a high school boy named Evan Hansen who struggles with extreme levels of anxiety and is asked to write positive letters to himself by his therapist (“Dear evan hansen, Today’s gonna be a great day and here’s why.”) and the events that occur around these letters after Another boy from his school is found with these letters before committing suicide.

 

“Anastasia” Being played April 23rd-May 5th, 2019. Is Based on the 1997 animated film of the same name. Anastasia Tells the tale of the Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikoleavna of Russia, Who after escaping an attack resulting in the assassination of her family loses all trace of memory of her former life. Years later under her new identity as the Orphan “Anya” she meets two con men try to use her likeness to the grand duchess in order to collect a reward for finding her. The show come to broadway in 2017

 

“A Bronx Tale” played June 11th-23rd, 2019. A new show inspired by the classic film and book by Chazz Palminteri of the same name, Tells the tale of a boy Who struggles between building a relationship with the mobster who initiates him into their way of life, and the relationship with his noble father. The Musical is co-directed by Robert DeNiro, the director of the original film, and Jerry Zaks, The original director of the play rendition of the show. The show first opened on broadway in December of 2016.
