DIY Holiday Gift Ideas

As soon as November 1st hit the calendars, Halloween decorations came down and holiday celebrations are on. Less than two months away from end-of-the-year festivities, gift wish lists are already being drafted, challenging people’s creativity all around the world. Truth be told, the task of getting gifts for all loved ones can end up being exhaustive, not to mention pricey. So for everyone struggling to bring together different yet easy gifts, here are some ideas to help:

1)Mason Jar Love Notes

To all those aiming for a more intimate and handmade gift, Mason Jar Love Notes are definitely what you’re looking for. Not exclusive for those who have a significant other, these can be given to anyone loved by you, ranging from best friends to relatives and mentors. All you need to compose this easy present is:

  • 1 Mason Jar
  • Colored sticky-notes
  • 1 pen
  • 1 ribbon

Once you have all materials, write sentences you feel your recipient would like to read in each sticky-note (these could be internal jokes, quotes from your favorite movies/books or things you love about them). Then, take all notes and wrap them like burritos, before putting them all neatly in the jar. Top it off with the bow and count one present down!

2) Citrus Seed-Starting Kit

If you want to help the environment while giving an exotic gift, maybe try some of these citrus seed-starting kits. Requiring only one trip to your refrigerator and another to your backyard, all you’ll need to assemble this kit is:

  • Citrus fruit
  • Soil
  • Seeds

Diverging from conventional seedling starters, instead of a pot or egg carton, take some oranges and limes and cut them in half before taking off all pulp, keeping only the peels by the end. Then, make a small hole in the bottom to allow water to flow out before filling up the fruit’s insides with soil and some seeds of your choice. Once the starters are done, they can be placed directly to the ground, as the peelings will decompose naturally and serve as a nutrient source for the growing bud.

3)Scratch-Off Travel Map

Aimed to those with higher artistic skills who are up for a more challenging alternative, the cork travel map is the way to go when in search for a homemade yet cool gift. Take a trip to your nearest craft store and pick up:

  • One world map
  • Laminate sheets
  • Acrylic paint
  • Liquid soap

As soon as you acquire all materials, use the laminate sheets to cover the entire map. Then, mix the small amounts of the paint with a few drops of soap and apply it over all countries on the map. Once it dries, your recipient will be able to scrape of the paint with a coin and keep track of all places on the world it visits!

4)Hot Cocoa Mix

Last but not least, one of the fundamental parts of Holidays takes its well-deserved place on the list. As the weather gets chillier everyday, what better way to warm yourselves up and bond than a nice cup of hot cocoa? With this simple and cozy gift, your loved one will definitely make a great use of this gift. Although the ingredients of this recipe are highly flexible to preferences or any allergies, to make the best homemade hot chocolate mix you’ll need:

  • 3 cups of whole milk powder
  • 2 cups of powdered sugar
  • 1 ½ cup of cocoa powder (sugary or natural unsweetened is up to reader’s choice)
  • 1 ½ cup of white chocolate chips
  • ¼ tablespoon of salt
  • 1 cup of mini marshmallows
  • 1 glass jar

With no further complications, just put all ingredients inside the jar and close with a ribbon if desired. These instructions serve up to 20 mugs and are foolproof. Enjoy!

Apart from all present-giving, the Holidays really are about family, friends, and cherishing those you love. Either while singing a carol or sharing a cup of cocoa, the spirit of the end of the year and a new year to come is the strongest unifier of it all. With that in mind, take this time to laugh with close ones at past memories, and make sure to create new ones on the way.
