Corey Braslow, of the Boca High Wrestling Team, is entering his second year as Head Coach. Coach Braslow is originally from Philadelphia, but he was raised here in South Florida. He attended Olympic Heights High School and later went to Florida Atlantic University (FAU). He currently lives in Boca with his wife, Cyndi.
Coach Braslow first got into wrestling in 1995, during his freshman year at Olympic Heights. He likes wrestling because it is a team sport, yet it has individual aspects. When it is an individual wrestler going one on one, it is only that one person representing his school in particular. Coach Braslow said that his favorite wrestling move is the “Double Leg Take Down” because it is the first move taught at any wrestling program. His all-time favorite wrestler is Bill Boggess because Boggess mentored Braslow to become Head Coach at Boca High. Boggess was the previous head coach of the Bobcat’s wrestling team and is still a teacher at Boca High.
When asked about winning districts, Braslow said, “We worked hard for many years, and it had been eleven years since our last championship. It was a special season because the kids went from knowing nothing to winning district.”
He said the key factor was motivation, as well as putting hard work through the entire year, because the kids had a goal and knew what had to be done to reach that goal. From this year’s Bobcat wrestling team, Coach Braslow says he expects to have the strongest wrestling team that Boca High has had in many years. He continued to say that it’s going to be a special season because the success from last year has only created a thirst for more success.
“The advice I would give for anyone trying out for the wrestling team is that it’s harder than anything they’ve ever done in their life, but everyone starts out not knowing anything.”
